Sarolta Monspart Award for Orienteering
For the promotion of orienteering
The award may be granted to no more than three people per year for outstanding activities aimed at promoting orienteering, increasing the sport’s visibility or contributing to its development.
The recipients are primarily not drawn from the inner circles of orienteering, but rather are civilian or public figures active outside the sport who, in the recent period, have done much to support and promote orienteering as a sport and/or a healthy lifestyle.
Gajdos Tamás’s first serious competitive sport was orienteering, which he took up 48 years ago, inspired by Sarolta Monspart’s 1972 World Championship victory. He was then captivated more by athletics and other running-based sports, but his enduring love has always remained orienteering, which can be practiced in forests and fields with nothing but a map.
Tamás has repeatedly helped promote orienteering through his TV and radio programmes, and previously also served as Vice President of the Federation. At Sarolta Monspart’s farewell ceremony, he delivered a farewell speech related to orienteering.
Meronka Péter entered the world of orienteering in 2021 as an external media service provider, programme editor, TV reporter and idea generator, in connection with the Győr Short-Distance National Championships.
Péter and his team, Oxygen Media Group, contributed significantly to the high-quality and spectacular realization of both the aforementioned major event in Győr and the popular and successful television sports series Tájfutó Magazin, launched in 2022 and broadcast on Sport TV.
Tájfutó Magazin (Orienteering Magazine) has become a professional and spectacular platform presenting orienteering from many colourful perspectives, greatly increasing the sport’s media exposure, while at the same time providing the member organizations of the Hungarian Orienteering Federation with a tool to approach supporters and sponsors more easily, thereby improving their financial opportunities and indirectly contributing to achieving a higher professional standard. Meronka Péter’s work in making all this possible is indispensable: through his ideas, direct and helpful attitude, flexibility and commitment, the media programme of orienteering continues to move forward.
